Genuinely new as a tool, even though it formalises R-01. The van Arkel–Ketelaar bonding triangle places any compound on a 2D plot using Δχ (electronegativity difference, horizontal axis) and χ̄ (average electronegativity, vertical axis), computed from data-booklet values. The three vertices — ionic, covalent, metallic — become regions of the same plane rather than separate bins, unifying the three bonding models into a single predictive framework. This feels alien because at GCSE bonding is a classification exercise: examine a substance, decide which of three boxes it belongs in, and move on. The triangle reframes the answer as a coordinate — not "what type of bond is this?" but "where on the plot does this compound sit?" — and that is a different kind of answer than a student has ever been asked to give in chemistry. It also demands two small computations (Δχ and χ̄) before any plotting, so a qualitative judgement is replaced by a quantitative one whose result lands somewhere on a continuous surface rather than resolving to a clean label. The conceptual move — from sorting into categories to locating on a continuum — is exactly the move R-01 asks for, but the triangle is the first time the student must perform it rather than merely accept it.
